Not to be confused with the Tournament of Ten, a specific version of the Clock Format in the USA.
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? The Tournament is a variation of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? with ten contestants playing the game and with a few contestants being eliminated after every round of questions.
The show was first conceived and commissioned by Canale 5 in Italy in December 2024 as Chi vuol essere milionario? Il torneo. This version of the format is being distributed by Sony Pictures and will first be showcased at MIPCOM in October 2025.[1]
Format[]
The game may be seen as a hybrid of the UK's Fastest Finger First with an influence of the Wer wird Millionär? Jackpot Specials from 2015.
In the qualification phase, 10 contestants compete across 15 Fastest-Finger-First questions. After Questions 5, 10 and 15, the lowest-ranked players on the leaderboard become eliminated, thereby reducing the remaining players to only 3 finalists. Each finalist receives a guaranteed prize based on their final leaderboard position.
In the finale, the finalists play individually one after another against a condensed but more challenging 10-Question moneytree. The structure mirrors the upper portion of a traditional 15-Question format, with higher values and slightly increased difficulties towards the questions. Before starting, each finalist must choose a single safetynet. They begin with two lifelines and can earn a third by correctly answering Question 5. There is no time limit; contestants may take as long as they need.
The goal is to push your total winnings as far as possible and become the leader of the show. If the next higher-ranked finalist matches or surpasses your total winnings, they become the new leader of the game and the previous leader must leave the show. Only the person who is considered leader at the end of the show, after all finalists have played their games, gets to keep their total winnings. Everyone else leaves empty handed, retaining only their guaranteed qualification amounts.[2]
