The llama (Lama glama) is a domesticated South American camelid, but in the U.S. Primetime Millionaire glossary it is an informal term more popularly used to refer to a contestant from the U.S. who blows one of the first five questions and leaves with nothing (see Wrong answer before first safe level) In more recent times, the term llama has been replaced by the more official terms zeronaire and empty-handed loser. In more recent internet slang, a flunk out within the first 5 questions is said to be an epic fail(ure) (noun), and the unlucky contestant is considered to have failed epically (verb).
The term llama was coined after Robby Roseman blew the first question with llama being the incorrect answer to 'Hannibal crossed the Alps using what animals?'
The British equivalent is a Marsupial moment, named after Michelle Simmonds answered the £1,000 question incorrectly in 2001, unable to identify 'Primate' as meaning both a mammal and a high-ranking Church official.
