The lights down transition is used in the game to make the contestant feel more nervous or scared while thinking about their questions.
On the £100-£1,000 questions, the lights are dimmed lightly, and stay consistent throughout gameplay, and a spotlight in the studio entrance constantly changes colour, and stops doing so after this level. On the £2,000-£32,000 questions, the lights are dimmed moderately, and the contestant can still see the audience members; the lights go up with every correct answer (or incorrect answer, which ends the game), and then go down again for the next question. On the £64,000-£1,000,000 questions, the lights rotate inwards and go out completely, leaving the contestant in complete darkness, except for a little bit of blue light in the Plexiglas floor, and the spotlight on the contestant and the host in the middle of the set.
