Ai Là Triệu Phú (English translation: Who is the Millionaire?) is a Vietnamese game show based on the original British version Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in its original format, which premiered on January 4, 2005 on VTV3. The main goal of the show is to win ₫250,000,000 (approx. $11,000) by correctly answering 15 multiple choice questions with increasing difficulty (the previous top prizes were ₫50,000,000, ₫100,000,000, ₫120,000,000 and ₫150,000,000 consecutively). The show is broadcast on VTV3 every Tuesday at 8.30 pm (GMT +7) (earlier 8.00 pm or 8.05 pm) and rebroadcast at 10.00 am (formerly 9.20 am) on Wednesday every week.

The show was hosted by Lại Văn Sâm from January 4, 2005, until December 26, 2017 when he retired at the age of 60. After the last episode featuring him as the host was aired, there was a selection of who would become the new host. At the end, Phan Đăng was chosen to take over the role as the new host of the show from 2018 to 2020. Đinh Tiến Dũng was chosen to be the new host from 2021.

The show switched to the Hot Seat version called Ai Là Triệu Phú - Ghế Nóng based of the original Australian format from September 7, 2010 to June 28, 2011. Taking audience's feedback into consideration that the original format is more liked and familiar, the show producers decided to convert back to the old format which returned on July 5, 2011.

History[]

  • Before Ai Là Triệu Phú, an unlicensed version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in Vietnam titled Rồng vàng was broadcast on HTV7 (Ho Chi Minh City Television) starting from May 23, 2003 and it became popular until around 2005.
  • In 2005, after the success of the Vietnamese international game show adaptations, namely Chiếc Nón Kỳ Diệu (Vietnamese version of Wheel of Fortune) and Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng (Vietnamese version of The Price Is Right), then-VTV3 chairman Lại Văn Sâm and staff proceeded to purchase the copyright of the British format of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? to produce the show in Vietnam and they named the show Ai là Triệu Phú (Who is the Millionaire?). The show was premiered on January 4, 2005 and became one of the most popular knowledge quiz shows in Vietnam at that time. The biggest winner in the first season was Nguyễn Văn Thắng who took home ₫14,000,000 after the record of reaching the 13th question.
  • The show took a break on February 8, 2005, due to the merge of all VTV channels during the 2005 Lunar New Year's Eve to simultaneously air special Lunar New Year programs, marking the first break of the show during special events in Vietnam.
  • Starting from the Vietnamese Women's Day special episode on October 18, 2005, the show's Top Prize was increased to ₫100,000,000. In the same season, Phạm Văn Hoan was the most successful contestant who won ₫40,000,000 after answering 13 questions correctly, becoming the biggest winner in the Vietnamese version until 2008. Under this money tree, 2 other contestants won ₫25,000,000 (reaching and walking away on question 13).
  • In 2007, the show's Top Prize was once again increased to ₫120,000,000. Also, Season 3 was the season to see the last usage of the original black graphic as well as the final season the copyright of which was owned by Celador. The biggest amount of money won in Season 3 was ₫35,000,000 by at least 3 contestants. This season also had the show's first-ever penultimate prize loser.
  • On May 20, 2008, when the show was owned by Sony Pictures Television (at the time branded as 2waytraffic), the show upgraded to the brand new Rave format, making Ai Là Triệu Phú become the first Asian version to use this format, with new blue graphics (first used in the Australian version), along with a new lifeline, Ask Three of the Audience. 2008 was the most successful year when the show had two records: Nguyễn Lê Anh and couple Bùi Thị Hà Thanh and Đào Hồng Vũ who both won ₫80,000,000 after answering the penultimate question correctly and earned themselves the chance to give a shot at the final question. Another contestant, Nguyễn Văn Yến also reached the question 14 but later took the money and won ₫50,000,000. In 2009, the biggest win was only ₫35,000,000 and was won by 2 different contestants (Nguyễn Đình Nhân and an unknown elderly). In 2010 it was unknown whether ₫35,000,000 was won or not (₫25,000,000 was won at least once).
  • The show was replaced by the Hot Seat version called Ai Là Triệu Phú - Ghế Nóng from September 7, 2010, to June 28, 2011. After the viewers had feedback that they like and feel more familiar with the original version than the Hot Seat version, the show returned to its original format from July 5, 2011. The most successful player of 2011 was Lại Tuấn Dũng, when he won ₫50,000,000 and decided to take the money on the Penultimate Question.
  • Starting from June 19, 2012, the show's Top Prize rose to ₫150,000,000 and remained until the end of 2021. Starting from March 31, 2013 (the day that is VTV3's birthday), VTV3 started broadcasting the channel in HD. Because of that, the show was also broadcasted in 16:9 aspect ratio (HD), thus making the size of blue graphics smaller, similar to the one used in Australia. On September 30, 2014, the show altered the blue graphic, similar to the 2010 - 2014 UK purple flux background.
  • On December 30, 2014, on the 10th Anniversary episode, celebrities Hoàng Bách, Minh Thư, and Tự Long appeared on the show. The episode also mentioned several of the most memorable contestants from the show's last 10 years, namely Nguyễn Lê Anh, Nguyễn Thế Kiên, Trần Tiến Thực, Đặng Thiêm and Trần Khanh.
  • From 2015, the show reduced the number of players competing in the Fastest Finger First round from 10 to 6 (first seen on Rồng vàng). The December 26, 2017 episode was the final episode with Lại Văn Sâm as the host. Before he left the show, the VTV3 staff and the show's fans showed the special celebration of his final episode. However, the celebration was off-air, but it was seen in some online news articles about its taping date.
  • After the last episode featuring Lại Văn Sâm as the host was broadcast, there was a selection of who would become the new host. At the end of the selection, Phan Đăng was chosen to take over the role as the new host of the show from 2018 afterwards. Since Phan Đăng became the new host, the Fastest Finger First round was scrapped and contestants were invited to the studio instead.
  • The show took a break on March 20, 2018 due to the death of Prime Minister Phan Văn Khải. Instead, Điều ước thứ 7 and Lời ru của mẹ replaced it.
  • In 2020, Hồ Thị Thụy Như became the second penultimate prize loser in Vietnam (and the fourth known in Southeast Asia), losing the second biggest amount of money in a single question in the show's history of ₫38,000,000. This record would go on to be broken by Trần Đặng Đăng Khoa on January 5, 2021 who lost ₫63,000,000 and became the first Top Prize Loser of the show's 15-year run.

    No audience

  • From April 7, 2020, to April 28, 2020, the show was taped before April 1, 2020, because of the isolation order from April 1 to April 15, 2020 (later April 30, 2020) to avoid the spreading of COVID-19. Also in the April tapings, no audience is presented in the studio, so the show introduced Ask two Experts and Plus One lifeline as alternatives to Ask Three of the Audience and Ask The Audience which has yet to return even after the episode where the audience was allowed to see the show live in the studio.
  • On May 26, 2020, the 2waytraffic logo at the end was replaced with Sony Pictures Television, but kept the theme for unknown reasons. However, starting from August 18, 2020, they used the right theme of Sony.
  • In December 17, 2020, Phan Đăng announced on his Facebook page that he would not host the show in 2021. He explained that the show would be a new version and believed that "he is no longer suitable for the position as the host". 2 weeks later, VTV3 released official information to the audience that Đinh Tiến Dũng would became the new host of the show from 2021.
  • Season 11 was the final season to use the 2014 blue graphics. According to the VTV3 24th Anniversary news report, VTV3 said that many game shows are seeing big changes, and Ai Là Triệu Phú is no exception. It is said that the money tree will have the values increased (which hadn't happened in Season 12 yet but later happened in Season 13, see the photo on source), and the show will apply the new graphics made by Dutch animator Olga van den Brandt (who produced the graphics for Bankgiro Miljonairs) and add more elements to the studio.
  • Season 12 saw the upgrade to the van den Brandt graphics as mentioned above, and the return of the LED screen replacing the physical sign. This season also had the show's first-ever Top Prize loser.
  • Episodes airing from August 24 to September 21, 2021 were recorded at S10 Studio - Vietnam Television, in front of the VTV Television magazine editorial office because S16 Studio was recording the first 4 issues at that time of the program Hãy yêu nhau đi (Let's fall in love) and later Điều ước thứ 7 (Wishing Saturday). This is the first time in nearly 6 years that the studio in front of the VTV Television magazine's editorial office recorded Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
  • As per notice in 2021, the money tree has the values increased in the last three questions starting in 2022; from ₫60,000,000, ₫85,000,000, ₫150,000,000 to ₫80,000,000, ₫150,000,000 and ₫250,000,000.
  • The show took a break for the second time on February 13, 2024 to make way for special Lunar New Year programs.

The show filming takes place in S16 (earlier S10) studio of Vietnam Television Station (VTV) in Đê La Thành, Hanoi, Vietnam. In earlier episodes, the show was taped in Gia Lam gymnasium, also in Hanoi. The original studio design was similar to the British studio.

In some earlier episodes (when the show was taped in Gia Lam gymnasium), the studio used the yellow lighting system (which was used on some WWTBAM international versions such as the U.K., Russia, the U.S.). Later, when the show moved to the S10 studio (later S16 studio) of Vietnam Television Station (VTV), the show began using the red lighting system.

The qualification in the Vietnamese version had some rules that was the same as the U.S. version's with notable exceptions:

  • In the test with multiple-choice questions, there were a total of 100 questions printed on a test paper. The contestants in the qualification round would have 40 minutes to finish the test. If they could correctly answer at least 70 questions out of 100, they would move to the interview round.
  • In the interview round, the production staff would ask potential contestants some questions in 10 minutes. After a week since the interview round, the show would call them, to announce that they would be in the FFF row on the show.
  • Originally from 2005 - 2010, a weekly contest called "Đi tìm triệu phú" (Finding The Millionaire) was made as a part of the qualification for people who would like to join the show. They would have to call a number (19001789) in order to answer questions from the staff on the dial. The winner of the contest would receive ₫2,000,000 (a Sufat motorcycle earlier) while the two runner-ups would receive ₫1,000,000 (no prize earlier). Also, the top 12 of the contest would automatically be advanced to the interview round without taking the multiple choice test. However, the contest was discontinued in 2010 with the introduction of the Hot Seat version. Also, the 19001789 phone number was eventually used for a "The Price Is Right" (Hãy Chọn Giá Đúng) weekly bidding contest for a chance to participate in a special show at the end of each quarter.

Fastest Finger First round existed on the show for 12 years, from 2005 to 2017. There are 10 contestants (6 starting from 2015) playing FFF for the Hot Seat. The original FFF set consists of a computer (from 2005 to 2009) they used a SONY monitor (LG monitor in earlier episode) with a keypad for each contestant to press. However, when the show returned in 2011, the FFF row was upgraded with a touchscreen from Shuttle. When Phan Đăng became the new host since 2018, the FFF was removed, marking the end of FFF row existence after 12 years.

The FFF monitor, host monitor and contestant monitor's graphic is the black graphic through out the entire 15 years, although the show changed to Rave graphic in 2008. Since May 2020, the host monitor and contestant monitor's graphic is the blue one.

In the earlier episodes, they used LG monitors, but they were replaced by Sony's ones from late 2005 to 2009, and Samsung's ones from 2009 to 2016 (including all Hot Seat episodes). On 2011, the show used new FFF touchscreen monitors from Shuttle for FFF Row. Since 2016, the show used new monitors (brand not shown) for the host and contestant. Since 2021, the show has been using new monitors from BenQ. These monitors are similar to the ones used in the UK version design-wise.

In Phan Đăng's era (2018-2020)[]

MCPhanDang-Ghihinh2

Host Phan Đăng and the contestant

Since Phan Đăng became the new host, the Fastest Finger First round was dropped and contestants are invited straight to the studio instead. Before going to the Hot Seat, the contestant introduces his/her name, address, hobby, nickname, then host Phan Đăng invited the contestant to the Hot Seat.

The host also changed Vietnamese name of two lifelines: Ask the Audience (Xin ý kiến khán giả trường quay) and Ask Three of the Audience (Hỏi ý kiến của tổ tư vấn trường quay).

Phone-a-Friend incidents[]

There are two incidents on this lifeline, and both of them were calling wrong phone number or wrong people:

  • The first one was on July 12, 2005 (?) episode, a contestant named Lê Thanh Huệ using Phone-a-Friend lifeline to call doctor Tùng, who was working on 108 Hospital. But the show accidentally called an unknown woman (the phone number is the hospital's number). After that she had to phone her dad named Thuộc, but the computer didn't have any of his information in order to call. There's a mistake of the name (the computer flashed the name Thuật and the contestant's dad was named Thuộc). She ended up not using Phone-a-Friend and answered the question. This is the first ever known Phone-a-Friend lifeline incident in the history of the show as well as International WWTBAM.
  • The second one was on May 7, 2019. A contestant name Phạm Quỳnh Như using Phone-a-Friend lifeline on the 6th question to call Vũ Văn Khanh. But the show had called a wrong phone number (The woman on the phone said "Wrong number!"). The host (Phan Đăng) said that this is the first time a Phone-a-Friend lifeline incident happened on Ai Là Triệu Phú's 15-year history, and the show will call him once again, and this time, they called the right phone number.

Rules[]

Fastest Finger First (2005 - 2010, 2011 - 2017)[]

The 10 contestants (6 starting from 2015 to 2017) would be given a question and four answers, and they must put those answers in the correct order within 20 seconds. After the time was up, the computer would then give the correct order, displayed green in the name bar of the contestant who got it right, and flash the contestant's bar name who got it in the fastest time; that contestant would advance to the hot seat.

Gameplay (2005-2010, 2011-2017)[]

A contestant will be asked a series of up to 15 questions with increased difficulty with no time limit. Questions 5 and 10 are known as milestone questions, if they are answered correctly, the value of the milestone question will be the contestant's minimum prize when they answered a question incorrectly. This continues until either the contestant answers all 15 questions correctly, misses a question or decides to walk away with all the money they have won so far. Any of these conditions being satisfied marks the end of a contestant's game.

After viewing a question, the contestant can walk away or continue. If they choose to walk away, they will leave with the money already won rather than guessing the answer. If the contestant answers a question incorrectly, the game ends and all of their winnings are lost, except that the money value on 5th question and 10th question are isranteed. A contestant could leave empty-handed if they give a wrong answer to any of the first five question (which was never on-air since 2011 to prevent home the viewing public from harassing them). By correctly answering all 15 questions, the player will become a "Millionaire".

After the previous contestant finishes the game, the next FFF question will be played. If the player has not finished the game but the episode's time is up, the player will be able to continue their run in the next episode.

Gameplay (2018-present)[]

Since Phan Đăng's era (2018 - 2020), the Fastest finger first round was removed, contestants are now invited straight to the Hot Seat. The gameplay was the same as Lại Văn Sâm's era (2005 - 2017), except after the previous contestant finishes the game, the host will invite the next contestant to the Hot Seat until the end of the episode.

Lifelines[]

In the show, there are four main lifelines (sự trợ giúp): 50:50, Phone-A-Friend, Ask the Audience and Three of the Audience. From May 5, 2020, the Ask the Audience and Ask Three of the Audience were temporarily removed and replaced by Plus One and Ask two Experts due to the outbreak of COVID-19 (later it is still being used even after the audience was back).

In total, there are 6 lifelines of the show (not including the Pass lifeline on Ai Là Triệu Phú - Ghế Nóng).

Current lifelines[]

  • 50:50 (Năm mươi - Năm mươi)
  • Phone-A-Friend (Gọi điện thoại cho người thân). On 2017, the video call was added on this lifeline, but it was removed since 2018.
  • Plus One (Hỏi ý kiến bạn đồng hành) (May 5, 2020 – present) - The contestant's friend will step onto the stage and try to help them. They will stay on the stage until the contestant either answers the question or decides to walk away, even when further lifelines are used.
  • Two Wise Men / Ask Two Experts (Hỏi ý kiến những nhà thông thái) (May 5, 2020 – present) - This lifeline was a variation of Ask the Expert, Ask the Star, and the third modified version of Three Wise Men.

Former lifelines[]

  • Ask Three of the Audience (Hỏi ý kiến của tổ tư vấn trường quay, previously "Tư vấn tại chỗ") (April 8, 2008 – April 28, 2020) - When this lifeline is picked, three people in the audience rows are randomly selected by the contestant for assistance, and if they suggest the contestant the option that they think it is the correct answer. This lifeline can be used after answering the ₫2,000,000 question (5th question) correctly. A total prize fund of ₫600,000 (3 gift packs from the sponsor Pantene in the black graphic version) is split equally for each audience who suggests the correct answer. However, if none of the three audience members give the correct answer, the prize fund will not be splitted.
  • Ask the Audience (Xin ý kiến khán giả trường quay, previously "Hỏi ý kiến khán giả trong trường quay") (January 4, 2005 – April 28, 2020) - The host will reread the question and the 4 possible answers (two if a 50:50 was previously used), and then the audience members will answer the question using an electronic keypad provided by the show with buttons A, B, C, and D. After 20 seconds, a graph displaying the percentage of people who voted for each answer is shown in the contestant's and host's monitors. After a brief read over of the results by the host, the contestant can choose to go with the audience or not, or maybe using another lifeline or even walking away.

The introduction of the later two lifelines have been explained as part of the impending relaunch (which would eventually occur in 2021), but was pushed up due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, they do not continues to be used even when audience returned.[1]

Special episodes and 10th Anniversary (2014)[]

The producers of the show usually celebrate holidays in Vietnam by producing special episodes with specific contestants that the producers will invite to join the show (i.e. On the International Day of Older Persons episode, the show will invite contestants whose age is at least 50). Celebrity contestants may also appear on major holidays (such as Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day and International Women's Day) and they are allowed to keep all of their winnings or donate them to their favorite charity (depend on their choice). Many special episodes before 2014 has couples (or special people) playing in the Hot Seats for the Top Prize.

There are 7 couples consists of a kid and an adult (In 2009 was their grandparents, in 2010 was their uncle or aunt, in 2012 was their parents or grandparents. And in 2021 (due to COVID-19, there were no audience), the kids will appeared as a pair and Plus One was their relative. Interestingly, the usage of Plus One were similar to Ask One of the Audience.)

There are also Vietnamese Teacher's Day special episodes which consists of students and teachers couples (sometimes couples were teachers only). Starting from 2011, the show only invited 10 stand-alone teachers playing for the Top Prize.

Celebrities, at least before December 30, 2014, appeared in the Hot Seat as a couple (although they did some episode with 10 stand-alone celebrities).

On December 30, 2014, the 10th Anniversary episode, celebrities Hoàng Bách, Minh Thư, and Tự Long appeared. The episode also mentioned some of the most memorable contestants from 2005 to 2014, including Nguyễn Lê Anh, Nguyễn Thế Kiên, Trần Tiến Thực, Đặng Thiêm, and Trần Khanh.

There are also episodes where staffs from VTV3 (the channel which airs the show) appeared as a contestant. Only a few were known, they are Khắc Cường, Việt Khuê (both later left VTV3 to working in VTV Sports), Nguyễn Diệp Chi (now working as the director of the show itself), Nguyên Khang, and Vũ Anh Tuấn (later left VTV3 to working in the Performance Department of Vietnam Television).

From May 5, 2020 to June 16, 2020 (and from June 1, 2021, June 15, 2021 to July 26, 2022) there were no audiences in the studio due to the spread of COVID-19. All of the contestants invited to the studio were mostly celebrities (such as singers, actors, TV presenters, comedians,...).

Top Prize Winners[]

No one in the show has become the real Top Prize Winner yet. But there are 3 fictional Top Prize Winners of the show: singer Phương Thanh, Ms. Kim Lành, and host Phan Đăng.

  • On September 6, 2013, singer Phương Thanh participated in a simulated game (a skit of the 43rd VTV's anniversary special show "A day with VTV"), she "simulatedly" answered all 15 questions correctly and became a "Millionaire". Also, she won the top prize of "working as an editor of Ai Là Triệu Phú for a day".
  • On December 6, 2014, Ms. Kim Lành won 4 prizes in a simulated game (A skit of Điều Ước Thứ 7 (Saturday Wishes)): A soccer ball with Lại Văn Sâm's signature, a Manchester United clothing set, a chance to force the host to do anything, and a ticket to the Malaysia vs. Vietnam friendly football match.
  • On January 27, 2020, host Phan Đăng won the top prize of a Đông Hồ's painting called "Đám Cưới Chuột" (The Mice's Wedding) in a simulated game (A skit of the "12 Con Giáp" (12 Zodiacs) - a VTV3's annual Lunar New Year special show), the picture was later given to host Lại Văn Sâm (former Ai Là Triệu Phú host) to show to Mr. Xuân Bắc and Mr. Tự Long.

Contestants who walked away empty-handed[]

There have been at least 14 contestants in Vietnam who walked away with nothing:

  • According to the article about the premiere of the show, there had been 3 contestants who left empty-handed in 2005.
  • In 2006, 5 contestants left empty-handed, including 3 women before Nguyễn Thế Kiên on the same episode, as well as Trần Ngọc Tuấn. He lost on a question about Dragon Ball. 4 years later, during Nguyễn Phương Linh's run, the host mentioned him.
  • One contestant in 2007 answered the first question wrong and won absolutely nothing.
  • In 2009, a 66 years old man left empty-hand after answering this question wrong:
?₫ (? of 15) - Not timed
What does the daughter-in-law called when she goes to her husband's house?
• A: Xuất khẩu (Export) • B: Xuất giá
• C: Xuất cảnh (Exit of a country) • D: Xuất bản (Publish)
  • On November 1, 2011, contestant Phạm Việt Phương walked away with nothing, and his run was edited out on-air (purposely by the staff), but his FFF introduction was still on air for unknown reasons. Almost 4 years later he returned and won ₫10,000,000, and his first run was not mentioned at all in his second run.
  • On May 8, 2012, contestant Bùi Thị Liên walked away with nothing as well, and her run was edited out on-air, but her FFF introduction was still on air for unknown reasons.
  • On May 6, 2014, two contestants Nguyễn Hoàng Lâm and Vũ Hải Hà walked away with nothing at all, and their runs were all edited out on-air. This is the only known episode in the show's history where two contestants who made it to the Hot Seat left empty-handed in a same episode. Vũ Hải Hà appeared in the FFF in November 18, 2012 but he didn't make it to the Hot Seat.
  • On August 13, 2019, contestant Lê Minh Hương left empty-handed after answering the 4th question wrong, but the host gave the contestant ₫200,000 as a consolation prize. Her run was never aired on TV.

Further information: Unlike most of the international versions, the run of contestants who flunk out on one of the first 5 questions in Vietnam will be edited out on-air and not be shown on TV at all. This is to prevent at-home viewing public from harassing them with nasty comments online (this became common starting from 2011, but it's unknown if they did that from the beginning). However, some runs of the contestants who do poorly than average such as using lifelines on the 1st question, or not knowing an answer to a ridiculously easy question [In Vietnam, the first 5 questions are super easy (usually came with gag answers), as all the contestants who get to the Hot Seat (with some exception) are all guaranteed to win at least ₫2,000,000 (₫1,000,000 before 2012, ₫800,000 before October 2005)], will be guaranteed to be uploaded to YouTube (earlier Facebook), where they will be harassed and cyber-bullied mercilessly and endlessly by online users who will post disgusting comments to their videos (and to their Facebook if they have), as well as being mocked by some newspapers, similar to the U.S. version, but much worse.

Catchphrases[]

  • Unlike some WWTBAM versions (the host said the catchphrase "Final Answer?" before the contestant locked in the answer), the host (Lại Văn Sâm and Phan Đăng) said an another catchphrase before the contestant locked in their answer. It was "Câu trả lời cuối cùng của bạn là?" (English: Your Final Answer Is?/What's your Final Answer?)
  • Instead of the famous catchphrase "Let's play Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" after a contestant said he/she knew the game rules, the famous catchphrase in Vietnam was "Chúng ta bắt đầu đi tìm Ai Là Triệu Phú!" (English: Let's start finding out to see Who is the Millionaire!) and it was said by Lại Văn Sâm. Host Phan Đăng slightly changed the catchphrase to "Và bây giờ, chúng ta sẽ cùng (Contestant's name) đi tìm Triệu Phú!" (English: And now, let's find the Millionaire with (Contestant's name)!) (formely "Hành trình Ai là Triệu Phú xin được bắt đầu!" (English: The journey to see Who is the Millionaire departs right now!)). The catchphrase is once again changed(now drastically) by current host Đinh Tiến Dũng, with him saying "Thưa quý vị, khi người chơi đã sẵn sàng thì chúng ta sẽ cùng nhau đi tìm Ai Là Triệu Phú!"(English: Dear Audience, when the contestant is ready, we're going to find out to see Who is the Millionaire!) while also doing a "money-counting" hand gesture. Also, after the contestant said that he/she was ready to continue playing in the episode when the klaxon sound made this run temporarily over in the previous episode, host Lại Văn Sâm said "Chúng ta tiếp tục đi tìm Ai Là Triệu Phú!" (English: Let's continue finding out to see Who is the Millionaire!). Host Phan Đăng slightly changed the catchphrase to "Và bây giờ, chúng ta sẽ tiếp tục cùng (Contestant's name) đi tìm Triệu Phú!" (English: And now, let's continue finding the Millionaire with (Contestant's name)!). Đinh Tiến Dũng reuses his first catchphrase and also uses the "money-counting" hand gesture.

Trivia[]

  • Ai Là Triệu Phú is the first WWTBAM version premiered in 2005, after Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (Nigeria) became the final WWTBAM version premiered in 2004.
  • Nguyễn Đức Thắng was the first ever contestant of Ai Là Triệu Phú
  • In an 2005 episode of Ai Là Triệu Phú, Trần Hoài Linh, a college teacher of Bach Khoa University (Hanoi) from Bình Định appeared and won at least ₫800,000. Another known contestant, Cao Thị Vi Ba, also appeared, but it's unknown if she made it to the Hot Seat or not.
  • In 2005, there's a special thing in the show: After answering every question from the second milestone [6,800,000₫ (10,000,000₫ starting from October 2005)] correctly and host Lại Văn Sâm wrote a cheque with that question's value, players were asked if they wanted to walked away or continued to play - which means players were able to walk away instantly and take the cheque right away, but they wouldn't able to see the next question. But even after choosing to continue and seeing the next question, they were still able to walk away before they locked in a option, similar to Iranian version. This was discontinued starting from Season 2 (2006).
  • On April 26, 2016, Trần Văn Tiền used the Ask the Audience lifeline on question 1 and 100% of the audience voted for one answer. In fact, many contestants (at least since 2015) have used lifelines on the first question. One of the most notable cases was Phạm Thị Quyên.
  • On May 6, 2014, Phạm Thị Thu used the Ask the Audience lifeline on her 8th question and 100% of the audience voted for one answer too, but that option turned out to be incorrect. There were at least 3 cases in the show where 100% of the audiences were wrong.
  • On September 9, 2014, Trần Trúc Anh took the Three of the Audiences lifeline on her 9th question and all 3 people gave her the wrong answer. It has also happened many times in addition, since the lifeline was introduced in 2008. This is a famous case in the show as all 3 audiences who helped her on the question, at that time, were still learning in university.
  • There are also cases that all three people give 3 different options, but there are few ones (for example, Nguyễn Thùy Trang's 9th question) where all 3 different options were wrong. At least two contestants are known to rejected all 3 different answers, and they were right.
  • There have been at least two contestants who incorrectly answered the Penultimate Question. The first one came from 2007, and the second one was Hồ Thị Thụy Như in January 7, 2020. She held the record of the biggest losers in the history of the show, losing ₫38,000,000.
  • Lê Thị Hồng was a contestant who appeared on the show on July 31, 2007, who won ₫1,000,000. However, after her appearance on the show, she was discovered to be a criminal, and was wanted by the police. She took part in the show under a different name of Lê Thị Cơ. Like Neil Muir, Andrew Lavelle and Sheridan Booth (whose winnings were stripped for having criminal records), her winnings were stripped, but unlike three stated above, she got arrested after 11 years of hiding in Đồng Nai, Vietnam.
